[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]Solange Knowles—————-I Decided
Speaking of phenomenal songs/music videos by underrated Neosoul QUEENS.
It’s no secret that I love Solange. She’s kind of the sleeper to Beyonce’s blockbuster, and they seem to have this great, non-competitive relationship where they both just do their own things and are awesome in different ways. Beyonce talks about being on the fast track to becoming a legend, and Solange likes to DJ and go on picnics.
My best friend from college and I were obsessed with this song and video when we lived together. The video especially, which was completely unrelated to the song and so imperfect in the most endearing way. One of the things I find appealing in a lot of artists is the talent for making the right mistakes, especially as they are coming into their own, and the “I Decided” video is a great example of that. Then later she did that amazing cover of “Stillness Is the Move,” which really cemented my feelings toward her. To clarify, my feelings are that she is great.
Good job. You did a good job.

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]“You Still Believe In Me”, The Beach Boys
Present outdoor gloominess aside, I feel the inexorable creep of summer, a season that I like to pretend to out-and-out hate, since it would be simpler, but which actually fills me with an achy sort of ambivalence, the yearning and regret of a young person undoubtedly wasting her youth, underlined by pervasive heat and missed opportunities for adventure compounded by the reluctance to leave my air-conditioned environs.
Anyway, the Beach Boys are pretty good, right?

I’m not saying this is the most important song. I’m saying it might be the only important song.

And I need you to not judge me.
I will quote Geoff, who once said, “Either you love ABBA or you just haven’t admitted it yet.”

…or metaphysics, or Olivia Newton John’s “Let’s Get Physical,” or whatever, but it’s a LAW that states:
When you hear the opening bars of Diana Ross’ “I’m Coming Out,” your mind will reflexively make an instantaneous decision about whether you want it to actually be “I’m Coming Out” or just the sample that leads into Biggie’s “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems,” and whichever you decide you want it to be, it will always, ALWAYS be the opposite, and as such, you will experience mild disappointment for approximately the first minute of either song.

I can never match, nor account for, the genius that made Tessa look at a photo of what might be a person on a date with a dog in a fancy wig, and think, “Yes! I know something that’s perfect for this occasion!”
But this could be research for her jazz duets album with Iggy Pop.
My friends, they take care of me.

Have I ever told you all of my ambition to record a duets album of jazz standards with Iggy Pop? Could you imagine how quality our version of “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” would be?
